A Tooth Brushing tutor that grades you at the end!

With advancements in toothbrush technology coming out almost every 12 months, it’s no surprise that electric toothbrushes are becoming more intelligent, even to the point where this little piece of plastic with a brush on the end, is teaching us how to brush our own teeth! This could not come soon enough considering that we are in a bit of an oral health crisis. People just aren’t brushing their teeth well enough to combat things like plaque, gum disease and other oral health issues.

Oral B Triumph 5000 ultimate test review

This is where things could possibly change. With the Oral-B Triumph 5000, this brush is not only one of the best on the market for brushing technology, but it actually teaches you how to perfectly brush your teeth.

Enter the era of smart products. We have Smart Phones that rule our lives, and now we have Smart Toothbrushes!

The Toothbrush Tutor

Oral B SmartGuide Device

So here’s how a little toothbrush can become your very own tooth brushing mentor.
Included with the brush is a wireless SmartGuide which is basically a display that you can have sitting on your bathroom shelf or windowsill. It links up with your toothbrush and monitors your tooth brushing performances. It will show you..

- How well you’re brushing
- Where you need to brush
- How long you need to brush for
- When to brush a new section of teeth
- If you’re brushing too hard or too soft

Basically it’s like having your mum or dentist in the same room telling you what to do.

The great thing about the SmartGuide is that it keeps you focused on the task in hand and at the end of your brushing session, you have the peace of mind that your teeth have been cleaned properly. It’s recommended that you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. Incredibly 90% of adults fail to do this on a daily basis.

Also another problem that people face when cleaning their teeth is brushing way too hard. Most brush like they are scrubbing their floors or trying to get a wine stain out of their carpet. Brushing too hard can cause a lot of damage, not only to your teeth but to your gums as well. The Oral-B 5000’s SmartGuide can detect if you are going to hard on your pearly whites. The SmartGuide will issue a red warning light at the very point you start brushing too hard and eliminate the danger of causing you permanent damage.

Oral B 5000 light indicator

Just like a teacher would mark your homework, the SmartGuide will give you a grade at the end of brushing. Once you’ve finished it will give you a mark out of 5 for how well you’ve brushed your teeth. Although you won’t get a gold star for getting 5 out of 5, your reward will be perfectly cleaned teeth every time you use your Oral-B.

The ToothBrushMan.com Ultimate Test

So that we can give the best review possible, here at ToothBrushMan.com, we test these bad boys out ourselves (not the same one between us all, we’re not that filthy)

I managed to get my hands on a Oral-B Triumph 5000 and I had the pleasure of using it for 2 weeks. The brushing itself is very impressive. Afterwards it feels like you’ve just been to the dentist. The only thing that’s missing is the night comfy leather chair and attractive dental nurse at your side. It comes with a big price tag, but it is well worth it considering how many cheaper electric toothbrushes you buy over the years that have failed after a year of use.

The first 3 days of using the Oral-B Triumph 5000’s SmartGuide was a joy. I’d get all competitive with myself trying to get a 5 out of 5 everyday for brushing, but after day 3, I got bored of the whole monitoring and assessing of my toothbrushing performance and realised that it had taught me enough to know what my teeth needed from the brushing.

It’s a really clever gimmick where the brush is connected wirelessly to the SmartGuide and it tells you exactly what you are doing right or wrong, but it’s not essential I don’t think to have this on everyday. Once you’ve perfected your technique, you can turn it off.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a great piece of kit and ideal for someone who has never used an electric toothbrush before. The SmartGuide is brilliant at picking up problems with your teethbrushing technique and helps you solve them.

Oooh My Delicate Gums!
I’m a sensitive guy in many ways, and my gums are included in that assesement of myself, so it’s important for me to have an electric toothbrush that isn’t too aggressive with the brushing and that has a smooth action on the motor. The Triumph 5000 is that brush. Even though it’s fast and rotates like no other, it’s surprisingly gentle and couple this up with a sensitive brush head, it’s like faires are cleaning your teeth with a magic wand!

It’s Robust and Hard As Nails
The one thing you can be sure of with Braun Oral-B products is robustness. They last. They take the hits and the drops like no other brand. With this particular model you can feel the sturdiness and the quality of build when you hold it. It’s a well made device that is easy to grip and control.

I have dropped mine about 10 times already with no damage or reduced performance. Ideal if you’re clumsy like me.

What’s the Battery Like?

The battery life on the Oral-B Triumph 5000 is very good. I can get a good 9 to 11 days of use with a fully charged brush. The indicator on the brush will let you know when you are nearing the end of the current charge rather than waking up one cold morning to discover that your brush has died and you’ve no chance of going to work with a clean mouth! Oh how I don’t miss the old days of electric toothbrushes!

It’s All In The Spin!

It’s quite incredible how fast these brushes move. This particular handset pulsates 40,000 times and rotates 8,800 times per minute. Quite an improvement on manual brushing don’t you think? It will remove twice as much plaque as manual toothbrushing. The two amazing thing about the Oral-B Triumph is that it’s the only toothbrush to be approved with a Platinum rating by the British Dental Association and it’s based around Oral-Bs 3D cleaning technology which rotates as well as oscillates.

Rotating and oscillating helps with the removal of even more plaque off your teeth. Studies have shown that rotating toothbrushes remove 11% more plaque, which in turn gives you a 20% less chance of suffering from gum disease.

All of the advanced technology behind the Oral B Triumph 5000 has been verified independently scientists, researchers and public tests. Oral B are so confident in this model that they offer a code which will enable the user to add an extra 1 year warranty to the 2 years you get with the brush.

Which one is better Triumph 5000 or TriZone 5000? Which one should you buy?

As you may know from doing your research into this particular model, there are 2 completely different models that are available in this range. The Triumph 5000 and the TriZone 5000. The main difference between the two is that The Triumph includes rotational brush heads, while the TriZone brush heads have a sweeping motion and is slightly bigger than The Triumph.

The Oral-B TriZone 5000

The Oral-B TriZone 5000

The great thing about the TriZone is that it is fully backward compatible with the rotational brushes too, which I must say are brilliant. If you go for this model then these are the heads that I would recommend you use.

The technology you get with The TriZone is state of the art and extremly new on the market. There are so many advantages in using the rotational brushes over the older style rotational heads, one is that it gives the user greater precision in cleaning the teeth and even more effective at removing plaque. You would also think that the bigger model would have less battery life than The Triumph. Well you’d be surprised, as I have not noticed any downturn in charge while using the Trizone. In fact I’d probably say that the Trizone lasted a little bit longer by a day or so.

With the rotational heads, better battery life and the upto date more advanced technology, I’d go for the Trizone 5000 over the Triumph, but that does not mean to say the Triumph is an inferior product.

ToothbrushMan’s Verdict

I’ve tested many brushes in my time and this is up there with the best. I can’t fault it. It’s robust yet gentle, it’s sturdy and functional, yet looks great and most of all, helps you brush your teeth better by using their SmartGuide device.
