Philips Sonicare HX6972 FlexCare

When you are looking for a new electric toothbrush, there are three main aspects to consider: price, performance and features. The order in which you stack these three things in terms of priority will determine which end of the range you are likely to consider. If price is the most important thing for you then you are more inclined to look at the lower end of a series. If it’s features that rock your boat then you are likely to check out the top end and so on.

But what If I could tell you that you can get a mid-range model that is capable of outperforming a top-end model, and comes with a sanitisation unit for ensuring optimal hygiene for your brush head at half the price of a top end model? Would you consider it?

This is the question that was put to me, so I had to check it out. Enter the Philips Sonicare HX6972 FlexCare. Is it really that good, or is the hype just another false flag waiting to blow off into obscurity.

What’s Different About The Sonicare HX6972 FlexCare?

On the surface, at first look not much. Out of the box, the handle of the HX6972 has very much the same look and feel as the Philips DiamondClean, and if not for the brush head, also has a similar look to the Braun Pro Care 6500. It has similar button and LED placement/display all be it with its own design and cosmetic chrome style. The grip is in the familiar Philips style as is the weight.

Standard Box Contents –

So here are the items that come in the box that you cold generally expect with any mode:

• Philips Sonicare HX6972/10 handle

• 2 x Toothbrush heads

• Travel case

• Two-year guarantee card

Things in the box that are a little more special – As well as the generic contents above, there are a few items in this box that are a little more special:

• Charging station – What’s special about a charging station? Well this one comes with an attached UV sanitizer for ensuring your brush heads are at optimal hygiene.

• UV sanitiser – If you know how much bacterial is clinging to your bathroom surfaces then you will appreciate how special this piece of kit is. It’s not only special, but it’s also rare – it’s not often that an electric toothbrush comes with a sanitisation station.

• Travel charger – In addition to the standard 2-pin UK plug charging chord for your charging station, the Sonicare HX6972 comes with an additional multi-voltage compact travel charger. This is much smaller than your standard charging stand, and fits nicely into the travel case.

Key Features And Performance

What You Would Expect From Philips – The Sonicare HX6972 has quite a few features that you would expect from this Philips range. It uses the Sonicare cleaning system, utilising 31000 brush strokes per minute to whip up the fluid in your mouth to clean effectively between your teeth and around the gum line. It also comes with the ProResults brush head, which uses a sweeping left to right rotation to clean your teeth.

Additional Feature With The HX6972
There are a flurry of additional features that are either tweaks of standard features, or additional modes to that which you get with less luxurious models. Firstly, there are a bundle of different modes – 5 in total which are; the Clean mode as you would expect, this is the generic mode; Gum Care mode that is designed to help improve your gum health; Refresh Mode that provides a quick clean and freshen up; Massage mode that is designed to help stimulate and strengthen the gums, and finally sensitive mode designed to operate with fewer brush strokes for a softer clean. The smart little LED display panel on the front of the brush lets you know which setting you are on.

Time Matters
The Sonicare HX6972 also comes with a Smart Timer which is a bit of an improvement on the standard 2 minute timer. What the Smart Timer does, is allows you to switch off anywhere in the 2 minute clean cycle to apply more paste or rince the head, then when you turn it back on it will remember how long is left in your 2 minute cycle. If you want to cut your cycle short, just turn the power off and place the brush on its stand and the timer will reset. A nice little touch.

The Importance Of A Good Cleaning Station

This is the real piece de resistance of the Sonicare HX6972, so much so that it deserves its own section of the review. The UV Sanitizer is built into the charging station, and is designed to help in removing 99% bacteria from the brush head.

Philips Sonicare HX6972 FlexCare - cleaning-unit

The sanitizer uses UV light to kill the nasty bacteria that make a home of your brush head. You might think your brush head is clean, that a rinse is enough but in all honesty bathrooms are riddled with bacteria and each time you put your brush down to rest, it accumulates millions of bacteria. This feature is a blessing and further helps to remove all harmful bacteria that could lead gum infections and gingivitis.

To use the UV unit, you simply remove the brush head after use and pop into the cleaning unit. It’s as simple as that, the cleaning station does the rest. It’s actually very simple to use and it doesn’t take long to clean the brush head.

Great Battery Life From The Philips Sonicare HX6972 Flexcare

The one thing that stands out on the Philips above all other competitors, is the longevity of the battery life. The Sonicare HX6972 is no exception to this and you can expect a good 20 days charge from a full battery.

The Pros And Cons

• Effective clean,
• Great attachments and features, including travel charger
• Fantastic battery life
• Great UV cleaning system.

• While you can pick one of these up at half the price of a top end model, it’s still pricy, perhaps too much for some.
• While the clean is effective, it’s just not as effective as the Braun.

The Bottom Line

The Sonicare HX6972 might not provide as effective a clean as the Braun Pro Care or TriZone ranges, there is only a marginal difference here. What you get with the Sonicare HX6972 is a set of features that would be the envy of any leading model and a great UV sanitisation unit which is particularly rare to find as an accessory with any other range of toothbrush. In short, you get the features and functionality of a top range model, at a snip of the price. If you can afford it, it’s worth it.
